Favourite Books Of All Time

I was thinking about books, as I do, and I thought I would start a blog series called Favourite Books of all Time.

I’m going to go through some of the books I loved growing up, the ones I re-read so many times the spines broke, and that I use as the foundation of the books I write today.

I haven’t read a huge number of books by CJ Cherryh, but this book was definitely one of my favourites growing up. It was first published in 1988, and I’m not entirely sure when I first read it, probably more likely early-mid 90s.

It’s about a young girl Taizu who is determined to learn sword skills from a sword master, Shoka, who has been exiled and lives by himself in the mountains. She’s filled with rage and a passion to get revenge on the evil Lord Ghita who is ravaging the country, and he’s determined to be left alone. I always loved the determination and grit she had to show to wear down the master swordsman. She stayed long after most people would have gone home with their tail between their legs. I totally believed in her and Shoka, and re-read this one many times…

It’s been a while since I last read it, but I know this is one book that I won’t have changed my mind about (ever done that? Gone back to read a book you loved as a teenager and discovered that it was really really bad? It’s like watching old MacGyver episodes now, and realising that he wasn’t a hunk of burning love…). It’s a great read from a skilled writer, who knows how to tell a satisfying story! 🙂

Here’s the link to Amazon in case you want to go buy it right away…!?  (Note – the Amazon cover is different to my cover, and I like my one better!!)

Anyway, if you see The Paladin in a second hand book store, or maybe want to buy a paperback from Amazon, I’d totally recommend it!

Has anyone else read it? Or love books by CJ?
